How to Limit Fees When Withdrawing Money from an Amazon Pay Wallet

Amazon Pay isn’t just a way to spend money — businesses can also use it to accept incoming funds. However, withdrawal challenges mean it’s not always your best option, and alternative payment platforms may offer a better choice.

Key Takeaway

  • Amazon Pay allows your business to accept funds.
  • But if you plan to withdraw funds to a bank account, you may experience challenges, such as high fees and varied payout timing.
  • Amazon Pay keeps part of your balance on reserve to cover customer obligations, so you may not get full withdrawal access right away.
  • At Payset, we aim to provide a better option.

Amazon Pay is best known as a way to spend money online, but it also allows you to accept payments and build up a wallet balance.

It’s easy to set up: if you’re a business user, you can add the Amazon Pay Wallet to the checkout pages of your website or storefront to start accepting funds.

And after you’ve accumulated funds in your Amazon Pay Wallet, you’ll need to withdraw your balance to an external bank account. This involves following Amazon’s payout or “disbursement” process.

For a streamlined experience, it’s important to be aware of Amazon’s payout rules and alternative payment options that can make things easier.

What Withdrawal Options Does Amazon Pay Allow?

Amazon has a few options for payouts from the Amazon Pay Wallet:

  • Standard multi-day ACH payouts to U.S. bank accounts
  • Standard multi-day payouts to bank accounts in supported regions, including the UK and several EU countries
  • Express Payouts via ACH in the U.S., usually within one business day

Note that Amazon Pay Wallet is distinct from Amazon’s main marketplace. Critically, Amazon Pay processes disbursements on a daily schedule, whereas Amazon in general has a two-week settlement and disbursement cycle.

Otherwise, you can expect your Amazon payout to arrive in the stated timeline.

But is it really the best option if you run a business?

Challenge #1: U.S.-Focused Fast Payouts

Amazon Pay processes disbursements daily, and it usually takes 1 to 2 business days after the posted date for payments to arrive in your bank account.

If you’re based in the U.S., you can use Express Payouts via ACH, which generally arrive in your bank account the next business day.

However, Amazon Pay’s fastest payout options appear to be limited to American users — and not offered in other regions like the EU and UK.

The Solution

At Payset, we don’t offer dedicated express payouts. Instead, we offer a broad selection of UK- and EU-focused payout methods noted for their speed.

This includes the UK’s Faster Payments Service (up to a few hours), CHAPS (up to 1 business day), and SEPA (1-2 business days).

We additionally offer US-focused options like SWIFT and ACH transfers. Note that we currently have some restrictions on incoming ACH transfers.

See this page for more information about our transfer times, or reach out to us to find out how we can solve your fast payment needs.

Challenge #2: Limited Conversion Options

Amazon Pay processes payouts in your region’s main currency, and you must have a bank in the region that supports the same currency.

This means Amazon pays out British pounds (GBP) in the UK, euros (EUR) in the EU, and U.S. dollars (USD) in the United States, and so on.

You can also enable basic multi-currency options and accept payment in up to 12 currencies, automatically converting incoming funds to your ledger currency.

However, Amazon does not allow you to receive disbursements in alternative currencies, nor does it allow you to add multiple connected bank accounts.

These restrictions may inconvenience businesses that need fine control over currency conversions or the ability to withdraw multiple currencies.

The Solution

At Payset, we provide a full FX conversion platform, allowing you to instantly convert 38 currency pairs at any time with real-time rates.

And because we treat payouts as standard transactions, you can generally send funds to your external bank account in multiple currencies.

Note that you’ll need to transfer currencies that are otherwise supported by your account based on region and pay all standard fees and conversion rates.

Ultimately, we believe our approach provides maximum coverage.

Challenge #3: High Fees

Amazon Pay charges significant fees on most transactions. For example:

  • 2.7% + 0.30 GBP per transaction in the UK
  • 3.4% + 0.35 EUR per transaction in the EU
  • 2.9% + 0.30 USD per transaction in the US

Amazon offers high-volume discounts, but if your transactions are under a certain threshold, you’ll generally pay the high rates shown above.

Depending on your region, Amazon Pay may also charge currency conversion fees, described as 0.5% above the wholesale exchange rate, as well as separate cross-border fees.

Note that these fees do not apply directly to disbursements. Instead, they increase the cost of accepting funds via Amazon Pay prior to payout.

The Solution

At Payset, we aim to offer competitive inbound and outbound transaction fees with a range of pricing models and low monthly rates.

Plus, our built-in FX exchange provides real-time conversion rates with complete insight into the interbank rate and our premium. You can be sure you’ll get a low markup and the best FX rate we can offer.

Whether our fees are ultimately lower than Amazon Pay depends on your exact account activities, but we aim to offer a highly affordable option.

See our full fee schedule for more details.

Challenge #4: Unclear Limits

Amazon Pay doesn’t set general limits, but its terms of service allow it to do so, impacting your allowed transfer volumes and withdrawal limits.

Those terms permit the company to impose limits based on the performance of your merchant account, risk assessments, and other factors.

Amazon also notes that Express Disbursements in the U.S. have a $1 million per-transaction limit, in line with universal limits on same-day ACH payments.

External banks may additionally set their own incoming limits. You should consider all bank limits before withdrawing from any payment platform.

The Solution

At Payset, we generally don’t impose maximum limits on transactions — you can send or receive any amount of money with us.

We may take time to perform additional compliance reviews on large transactions. Additionally, some payment networks that we provide access to may impose limits on transactions separate from our own policies.

But we ultimately aim to process transactions of any size, making us a strong choice for high-volume and high-amount payments around the world.

Challenge #5: Reserved Funds

Amazon Pay places users’ funds on hold or reserve to ensure that there is a sufficient balance to cover customer liabilities.

This ensures that it can cover obligations to those who pay you, including chargebacks, refunds, and Amazon Pay A-to-z Guarantee claims.

This affects the amount of funds available for withdrawal. Your reserve tier and type, such as rolling reserves, also impact payout timing. Additionally, you’ll experience a three-day hold on payouts after changing bank account details.

New accounts also face an extended wait time for the first payout. Amazon typically processes your first disbursement 14 days after your first transaction.

These limitations can make it difficult to access all of your money, especially if you’re a new user under a stricter reserve tier.

The Solution

At Payset, we don’t generally have any reserve policy that limits funds — you can usually access the funds in your account without restriction.

We may pause some transactions in order to request additional KYC documentation, but we’ll notify you quickly. And you can often provide information ahead of time to help us process your payment faster.

We rarely request information after you’ve transacted with a particular external account, so you should be able to perform repeat payouts with ease.
